Debby Tansley - Landscape Photographer
Welcome to my world of environmental photography, I am passionately devoted to capturing the profound beauty and delicate fragility of our natural world. With a strong background in visual arts and extensive experience documenting diverse environments, my work is a harmonious blend of aesthetic elegance and environmental consciousness. Through my lens, I aim to not only celebrate the majesty of nature but also to inspire thoughtful reflection on the critical ecological issues of our time.
My photographic practice is deeply rooted in an acute awareness of climate change and environmental degradation, making my work particularly relevant in today’s rapidly changing world. Each project I undertake goes beyond mere visual exploration; it is a conceptual inquiry into the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world. As environmental challenges become increasingly urgent, my work seeks to illuminate the delicate balance that sustains our ecosystems and to underscore the necessity for immediate and sustained action. I aspire to evoke a sense of responsibility and inspire collective efforts toward a more sustainable future.
My photography is not just about creating visually pleasing images; it is about telling compelling stories that resonate with the environmental realities we face. Over the years, I have embarked on various projects that seamlessly blend artistic expression with environmental advocacy.
My journey as a photographer has led me to explore landscapes and address significant ecological themes. Each project I undertake is driven by a deep commitment to raising environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable practices.
On this website, you will find a curated selection of my projects, each reflecting my dedication to both the art of photography and the urgent need to address the environmental challenges of our time. I invite you to explore these visual narratives and join me on a journey toward fostering a more informed and responsible relationship with our planet.

Notable Projects
Uisge Beatha - Water of Life
This project celebrates the power, beauty, and potential of hydropower in Scotland and Wales. Named after the ancient Scottish term "Uisge Beatha," meaning "water of life," it explores water as a vital source of energy and life. During visits to the Cruachan Power Station and the Coire Glas, Loch Lochy expansion site in Scotland, I captured the dynamic movement of water, producing blue abstract images that evoke water's fluid, ever-changing essence. Complementary panoramic images offer a broader perspective on the harmonious coexistence of nature and technology in the Scottish Highlands. In Wales, I continued this exploration at the Dinorwig Power Station, creating images that highlight the grandeur and significance of hydropower. This project aims to foster a deeper environmental connection and promote hydropower as a clean, renewable energy source.

Maritime Merseyside: After the Blitz
In this project, I focused on the history and environmental impact of the Blitz bombings in Bootle. The shifting tides and erosion in Crosby have recently revealed rubble hidden under the sand dunes. I collected discarded bricks from Crosby beach, creating still life images that juxtapose archival photos of Bootle’s evacuations and community devastation.

Staged
Coinciding with National Recycle Week, I collected discarded glass bottles from canal banks to create positive, aesthetically pleasing images. This project aimed to transform abandoned objects into art, highlighting the potential for recycling and reimagining waste.

Kinetics
Centered around clean kinetic energy, I crafted a small accordion-style book with images illustrating kinetic energy. The book itself became a kinetic object, creating energy as it was opened and closed, symbolizing the concept of sustainable energy in a tactile form.

Trees of Sefton
For this project, I illuminated trees with green and red lights to emphasize their significance in both woodland and urban settings. The green light represented woodland areas, while the red highlighted urban spaces where emission levels are high. This work aimed to raise awareness of the vital role trees play in different environments within my hometown of Sefton.

Cleaner Energy
At Shotwick Solar Park in Deeside, I visually explored cleaner energy solutions. This project included a small zine printed on paper from Shotton Paper Mill, which is directly powered by the solar park. The mill no longer produces newsprint paper, making this zine a unique piece of history.

Plant a Seed for Change
Inspired by the UK's goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, I created an immersive exhibition combining stills, audio, and video to present positive images of the natural landscape. The exhibition included audio recorded on-site and offered visitors a sapling from the Paulownia tree, known for its rapid growth and high carbon dioxide sequestration. This interactive experience aims to inspire viewers to contribute to environmental conservation.

Personal Interests
When I'm not behind the camera, I enjoy exploring new landscapes, studying environmental science, and participating in community clean-up initiatives. My personal interests deeply influence my professional work, driving me to use photography as a tool for environmental advocacy.
